This project was completed as part of my industrial design minor. The requirements: use two materials (one "harder" and one "softer") to design and build a stool that would fit in a 5"x11"x14" box when disassembled.
Our team chose steel and wood as our materials - we thought the contrast in look would provide a nice aesthetic to the design. Each teammate also chose a different wood for the top and fin - I chose an ambrosia maple and finished it with a light Danish oil to preserve and highlight the beautiful natural look of the wood grain.
We focused our design on the concept of movement; we took inspiration from the dynamic design of a bicycle seat. From there, we produced a 2D sketch of the shape of the fin and top on Rhino, and then cut the wood with the laser cuter. The last step was cutting, bending, and welding the metal.
I designed the logo shown to highlight the bicycle-inspired design of our stool.
